Why did BMW switch from the “Airhead” style boxer motorcycle engine to the “oilhead”?
As far as I remember, BMW stopped making the "airhead" boxers in 1995. Is there anything intrinsically better with either design? To people who've owned both; what are your opinions? Which one did you like better?

The 2 air totally different. In general airheads are a air cooled boxer twin. Oilheads are an oli cooled boxer twin that must have oil coolers (some airheads do have oil coolers for additional cooling, R100GSPD). The oilhead was the second generation twin, a evolution from the airhead. Oilheads came about as CC size and technology grew. Same with other technology such as the monolever, paralever, and telelever. Some say airheads are more reliable and user-friendly to service. Oilheads generally get better gas mileage. Airheads have four valves. Oilheads have eight valves.
