I bought a Kawasaki Vulcan 500 for my first (after many years). It was a great learning bike and had more than enough power for a beginner. A year later I upgraded to a Vulcan 900 which is an awesome bike. If you try to get something too big too soon you are liable to regret it. You need to get your confidence and balance on a bike you can totally manage. Go look at different models and sit on them, they all fit differently depending on your height and build.
