What should I do to train for a cross-country bike trip?
I am a sophomore in high school, and want to ride across the USA after I graduate from High School, just before I go to college. So, that gives me about 2.5 years. I want to know what type of bike would be best, what I need to do to prepare, and how i should train. This is not a motorcycle trip, mind you, but a bicycle trip.
Thanks so much!

You should ride a lot, and consistently in all types of weather. The recommendation is to train 2,000 miles before the the trip. Pick a time of mostly good weather and ride *every* day for two weeks, Riding across the country is riding for 52 days! Have a professional bike fit, it’s worth every penny. I highly recommend going with a group. I did the Cross Country Challenge in 2008. It was an incredible experience. b/t/w, we had a 16 year old do the ride with his grandfather. Way cool.
Check out my blog to see the ride through my eyes.

You want to get a touring bike and starting ridding. Start out with an easy ride for the first 10 min to warm and then pick a gear that you can pedal at 70-90 rpm’s with a lite pedal pressure. You want to spend a hour or more on the bike every day and longer on the weekends. Work your way up to 50-70 mile rides and try a few centuries to get a taste of long distances.

Start NOW!!! Biking is something you can’t just train really hard for in one season it is based upon many hard season’s of training. I have been riding a two wheeler since the age of 2. Each season I improve. Set goals! I’m a freshmen in high school and this past summer I had a goal of 1,000 miles. Just biking around my town and training for a triathlon. I did not reach this goal but was very close…879miles! Setting this goal made me realize I need to keep on pushing myself!
extra’s:
1. How often have you ridden in the past and for how long; miles wise
2. Do you plan on going on this CC bike trip alone? …what route, this can totally change up everything!!
