If there was a "best" one, everybody would be using it. I’ve had Shoei and currently have an Arai. My son has had a Shark and now has an HJC. To each his/her own. You need to try before you buy. I nearly bought an XL, but the salesman assured me the padding on a size L would settle in and be more comfortable in the long run.He was right.
The big motorcycle magazines occasionally do an exhaustive test of helmets. They buy a few dozen, various brands, and send them to professional testing labs, then report the results. What they always find is that all helmets protect about equally as well. In fact the strongest is usually one of the cheaper models, made of ABS plastic. (It’s heavy though.) You pay more for comfort or features, but you don’t get more protection.
Different mfgrs seem to make helmets for differently-shaped heads. I have an HJC shaped head. I fell in love with a Nolan helmet but it just felt really strange.
Also in these articles is usually a graphic showing what percentage of impacts come from which direction. They show that about 40% of impacts come from the front, so a full face, or flip-up helmet is worth it.
I have an HJC modular helmet that I find very comfortable. I payed $160.00 for it and $130.00 for my girlfriends. Their full face helmets may cost a little less but I like the freedom of a modular. The face flips up so I don’t bake my brains in traffic jams or red lights in the summer. You can also get a Rodya modular for $100.00 if your head fits it but it makes my forehead hurt. I just can’t see paying the 4 to 5 hundred dollar ticket for a Shoie which is heavier than an HJC. I had a G Max helmet that I payed $90.00 for and it was good, but I scratched it in my last accident so the insurance company took it and gave me the money for the HJC.
Cheap head cheap helmet, no short cuts here you only have one head. Evry one has their own favourite so although you will get numerous recomendations the only way you will find ”yours” is to do the dealer rounds, try evertyhing you can on, might take a few visits to a few dealers but once you’ve bought it your stuck with it. Full face fixed are good lots of protection flying bugs road gravel, but can be a bit to warm in summer. Full face flip fronts are usually more comfy, or if you don’t tlike the full enclosure ones lots of puddin basins around. I use both , full winter half summer, plus a bug scarf!
Since no helmet has ever withstood an impact of over 13 MPH, I would look forcomfort and the least expensive.
I buy Scorpion helmets, but there are many good brands out there. You don’t have to spend a lot of cash to get a safe and comfortable lid. The most important thing is finding one that’s DOT or SNELL rated that you think is comfortable enough to use whenever you ride.
PS
The idea that no helmet protects you over 13 MPH is just plain stupid and obviously comes from someone who has never watched motorcycle racing.
Protection does not necessarily improve with a higher-priced helmet, but comfort, venting, and faceshield design do. I’ve worn Arais and Shoeis for years. Since I go to the track, I have to have a helmet with Snell approval (track regulations), but I don’t think it’s that important for the street.
