I really want to learn to ride a motorcycle. If I do, I will be learning on a 250cc Ninja. I will be taking the MSF course. I will have a DOT/SNELL certified helmet, armored gloves, armored jacket, and proper boots. I am not a daredevil, and I am not buying a sportsbike to fly down the roads and weave between cars. I am simply buying one because they are an affordable means of transportation, motorcycling runs in my family, and it looks like a great hobby to pick up. BUT HERE'S THE PROBLEM...

My dad doesn't want me to get one due to the dangers. I agree that riding can be dangerous, but he owns three 1,000+ cc motorcycles. He says that when he started riding that things were different, and people actually watched out for bike riders. I also agree with this, but if everyone thought like him, they wouldn't take up motorcycling because things aren't the same as they used to be.

I need you guys to help me show him that it's not so dangerous if approached correctly. Show me some studies!

OK. I know nothing about motorcycles and/or cars. But I was backing out of my driveway and scuffed the side of my dad's side bags that are attached to his 650CS BMW motorcycle. It is pretty hard to tell, only he and I can really see it since we know, but I feel awful about it and was wondering, since the actual bags are made of plastic and are lined with aluminium on the outside if I can just buy a new alumnum casing to attach to it. I'm trying to suprise him and was wondering if anyone who has had a similar situation can tell me if that is even possible and where I can purchase it. Thanks!

What's happening when motorcycle one of tyres suddenly explodes due to riding process? Can it even happen or do motorcycle tyres are so hard differently from cars' not to explode? Yesterday I just thought about situations when you riding too fast to see any edged barrier and ride on it? Will rider fall from motorcycle then or continue riding, just tyre will slowly release it's air? Or it explodes loudly and splashes?

Ok, I wrote an introduction to this quesiton that was longer than some books, so I just started over because otherwise I'd never get any answers 'cause the intro was longer than the freaking question itself. I'll try to keep it "to the point", but I have always had trouble with that. I ramble. I'm a rambler and I rant. I'm a ranter, putting in millions of details that have nothing to due with the topic. OK - my dad buys his second motorcycle as he is wanting to get into riding. I have been riding every year weather permitting for 13 year and I know my way around a bike pretty good. I have never owned a harley davidson, only Yamaha's and kawasaki's. The first bike my dad bought was a Kawasaki. He's been taking riding lessons from me for free, and he also signed up for a course at our local community college that is taught by guys who've been riding for centuries, and they'll teach him things that even I don't know. So one day we are driving and there's a sparkling clean sportster (1200 XLH) sitting on the side of the road ("for sale sign clearly visible"). I call the number and offer the guy 00 as it's a 1990 and has 15,000 miles on it, although the bike is FLAWLESS and loaded with aftermarket shiny things, although all moving parts are stock. He accepts. I tell him that it's actually my dad who is interested and I'll have him call back later. He does, and sets up a test ride (to be performed by me) the next day. We go, I ride (I ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS wear a helmet), but I didn't on this test ride because I had to be able to hear EVERYTHING IN THE ENGINE, ETC. So I ride for about 10 minutes and the bike is in such incredible condition I just can't believe it. I report back and dad agrees to buy it on the spot. The next day he pays the guy and get's the temp tag and insures it. Tonight I went down and picked it up. While we were in the guys large and spotless garage, fully equipped with about 10 motorcycles, 3 cars, and 4 toolbenches, I didn't see the expected accompanyment of tool kits. So I figure he outsources his maintainence. Ok. I turn the fuel switch to "on" from "off", and all of a sudden the bike is literally purging the entire tank of gas out of what appears to be a 1/4 inch rubber hose that someone had threaded between those iconic thin metal bars that run vertically from the crankcase up each side of the cylinders. The hose STARTS at the bottom of the air filter, although I don't thing it has anything to do with it and runs up direcly to the "OFF/ON/RESERVE" switch. So I quickly switch it off, and it stops leaking. The seller is horrified because he's already been paid and we haven't even taken possession yet, 2. The bike didn't do this when I rode it the day before, and 3. his dog bit my dad in the ass when he went over to pay him (and my dad is a lawyer, "bad combination of events"). So we spend 40 minutes trying to figure out first of all what the hell that hose is anyway.... Why is it now leaking fuel copiously, and was it originally connected to something else? did it become disconnected? Next I decide "ok, let's take it just outside of the garage, fire it up with the switch on "off", then turn it "on", which we did, and it still pissed fuel all over the ground. By this time I'd removed it from it's previous position up against the base of the outside of the lower part of the block (too hot for rubber hose, obviously), and I'd zip-tied it so it wouldn't touch the exhaust either. Ok, WTF!!!!???? So, in a last ditch attempt to just GET IT HOME, I decided to clamp it off. Between the 2 of us we decided to use a paper clamp (not clip, CLAMP), those black things with the little silver handles to open and close them that can be used to pinch other people for fun at the office. We also screwed a screw of slightly larger diameter than the inside of the hose into the end of it, and...... drumroll... IT STILL LEAKED, SOMEHOW, but to a lesser degree. He followed me home and the performance of the bike was severely compromised. I had to keep it revved at stop signs and it felt like it was missing on one of the cylinders occasionally. SO: WHAT IS THIS HOSE, WHAT IS IT'S PURPOSE, AND WHAT'S IT SUPPOSED TO DO? IS IT SUPPOSED TO BE HOOKED TO SOMETHING? IF SO, WHAT? PLEASE. I WILL RECANT ALL MY YEARS OF RIDING JAP BIKES IF SOMEONE WILL PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. Otherwise, I'm going to have to pay someone to do it and they might die of laughter from how stupid I am that I couldn't figure it out on my own. This bike is beautiful and I'm really hoping that it doesn't reinforce the rumor that Harley's are hanger queens (which is the only reason I hadn't bought one myself prior to this bike). I know that there is someone out there who can answer this in the blink of an eye. Also the oil/filter and plugs haven't been changed in friggin' trillions of years so I'm going to do that as soon as I can get the right plugs for it. I bought a case of 4 cycle bike oil about 3 years ago and I still haven't
used it all, so this oil change should finish it off. That maintainence I can do myself, but if I end up having to take the bike to my mechanic to have this hose thing figured out, I'll just have them change the plugs/oil/filter. Well, that about does it. If I remember anything else I'll post an update. Thank you all in advance for your help. I'm sorry I'm such a dumb-ass but this is my first Harley and I'm still basically a Harley virgin so I haven't found the g-spot on them yet. Thx, john in Iowa

i want to bring my toddler to day care and me to work in my bike. i live in a university campus. there are a lot of cars and potholes en route. help.

And I mean the old-fashioned way: Just getting on one and learning by trial and error. (I don't know anybody who rides and I don't have the cash to hire a teacher or what not.) I drive stick on cars usually, so I'm familiar with clutch in/out and shifting, etc. I was planning on buying a cheap dirtbike and going out to some private property or maybe a deserted industrial area and just learning it old-school. Of course, I'll have a helmet and heavy clothes on, but should I wear a cup too? You know, to protect "the boys"? Dirtbike, yes/no? What do you think? Tell me! I appreciate all serious answers and thank you for your time!!!!!!!

I was getting off the freeway off-ramp and stopped at the stoplight in order to make a left. I was in front of all the cars waiting with another motorcycle behind me for the light to turn green. The light turn green and I rode 20 feet and all of the sudden a semi comes passing by from the left, trying to beat the red light, and I crash into the back tire, and the front of my motorcycle is totaled. The motorcycle behind me chases the semi truck down because he didn't stop, perhaps because I hit the back wheel of his semi, or since he ran a red light; then, a few people that were behind me also waiting at the light get out from their cars and help me drag my motorcycle to the curb.

Facts: 1) the semi truck absolutely ran a red light.
2) I had two witnesses who stayed and explained to the police that the semi ran a red light.
3) I was getting off the freeway and I neither have a motorcycle license and my permit expired a month ago.
4) I only have liability insurance.
5) I overhead the truck driver tell the cop that the light was yellow.

What is going to happen? Also, my 0 Suomy helmet was damaged: if they find the semi driver at fault, will I be bought a new helmet?

Also: This happened in California.

i wanted to buy the honda cbr 125r, but she said no. i asked if i could have a 49 cc scooter, and she still said no.

we were in a dirt road and the car in front of us was driving in the middle of the road. a motorcyclist popped up around the corner and he braked hard. the motorcyclist fell and dropped his bike. my mom pretty much freaked out cuz she saw a motorcyclist fall. she looked at motorcycles on the internet and saw people doing stunts and crazy stuff.. of course they got hurt and now my mom thinks they are extremely dangerous.

i believe that motorcycles arent that dangerous... they are only dangerous when you do stupid stuff, like speeding, stunds, wheelies on highways, etc.... and also when cars change lanes without checking their blindspots...

so now what should i do? i look at motorcycles on craigslist almost everyday. i know i cant afford any of them, but i enjoy just looking at them. i love biking too. i bike around the city with my friends. i think its just awesome to ride and balance on two wheels. Im not the type of guy who would do stunts, and go way above the speed limit. I want to be the average safe biker who obeys the law...

ok anyways.. going a bit off topic.........................
how can i convince my mom to let me get a motorcycle? i am old enough to get my motorcycle license. im 18 and i got my drivers license already...

wow my mom is so overprotective she wouldnt even let me drive by myself to a place thats more than 20 minutes. Its really annoying, but i know she just wants me to be safe.

my dad lets me get a motorcycle, he actually told me that i should get a motorcycle cuz its fun and saves a lot of gas... unfortunatly my mom disagrees.

so how can i convince her to let me buy a motorcycle?

i was thinking about getting a bike but do the tires blow out like on cars cuz then you would only have one good tire and crash right?

Besides the oil change what other adjustments will they do?? I work on cars all the time and are mechanically incline, But this is the first cycle I've owned...so I need to learn...can someone help me out?

I know that most cars will comfortably do 100,000 miles without much hassle, and if treated right can do in excess of 200,000.

At what stage would a motorcycle be nearing the end of its life cycle, requiring parts to be replaced etc?
I'm thinking about buying a second hand Suzuki Bandit 650cc as my first bike but I haven't a clue how many miles a well kept motorcycle can handle.

For example what would the equivalent of 23,000 miles on a 650cc bike be in car miles?

Thanks

What financial institutions operating in California will offer me a secure personal loan if I put up my BMW motorcycle as collateral? Looking online I only seem to find financial institutions that allow people to offer their homes or home equity or cars as collateral. I'm in California and I am currently unemployed.

A graduate student at my university is interested in selling his motorcycle, and it looks just like the sort I've been wanting to buy for some time. It's a 1987 Honda Shadow 700cc Cruiser, and outwardly it seems in good shape. He is only the second owner, tells me it has 37,000 miles on it, and has needed no maintenance except new tires, a new battery, and oil changes every 3,000 miles. He tells me the one issue is that it has a broken plastic display and mounting for the odometer and speedometer from when he got ran off the road at 15mph and had to lay it down, but that everything including the gauges have worked fine in the two years since.

I have not owned a motorcycle before and admittedly know much less about them than I do about cars, and unfortunately don't know any motorcycle owners well. However I understand motorcycles generally require less intensive maintenance than cars, being of a simpler design, and can stay useable longer.

His asking price is ,300, his stated reason for selling that he is looking for something more sporty. I don't have much money and can't afford a brand new one, nor to have a professional come out and take a look at it.

Can anyone offer me advice on what to look for when examining this motorcycle to make sure it is worth the price, and will be a useable and lasting vehicle that won't have unexpected maintenance problems or safety issues arising?

Thank you!

I saw a metropolian scooter from honda. Interested in buy one to get around in my neighborhood. Get to and from work. I work about 15 block from my house. I current drive a car. I want to have one to get to work. Save on gas. I never ride a bicycle before. I want to know how hard it is to learn to ride a scooter. Is this a good starting point. Is this a good model for 2,000. I purchase a electrical one before for 3 hundred. It broke after 2 days. Are these more durable like a regular motorcycle but only slower and lower speed. I want to know also if license is required and insurance required. Any requirement. I live in northern california. Is this a high theif item. Is it easy stolen. I want to know will it be safe parking in a parking lot or on the street. How do you park a scooter. In the same spot as cars.

I'm just trying to figure out some of the best websites to buy parts from, both for motorcycles, dirt bikes, and cars/trucks.

The biggest thing I'm looking for is low price/low shipping, as well as a wide selection.

What are your favorites?

They work on vehicles like suv's, why not trailers? Maybe the suspension on cars takes the weight of the rim? Anyway's can someone please give me an answer.... Thank -you

My husband wants a Yamaha R1 very badly! I really want to get him one for Christmas this year. I am knowledgable of cars however outside of Harley Davidsons I am completely clueless to motorcycles. I know that the newer models are VERY expensive, but I am wondering if I were to buy a later model like a 94" or 95" would that save me some money and where do I find it at. I live in Rochester, NY. OK GUYS ! HELP A SISTA OUT !(ha-ha)

or is this just a misleading sentence... "DaimlerChrysler manufactures cars and BMW motorcycles in Berlin."
