I'm really sorry about your sons dirtbike. It's frustrating to know there are people out there who will steal things instead of saving the money to buy it themselves. The same thing happened to my boyfriend. He always put his dirtbike his the garage and then one night he didn't, and it was stolen...while we were awake. He filed a police report but nothing came back until 6 months later. The bike had been bought and sold 3 times and the motor was gone. They caught the guy stealing all the bikes. He's in jail now for 12 years....not just for theft but for attempted murder. Scary huh? My advice to you is the same thing my boyfriend done. Put an ad out pretending to me someone else and say you're looking for 'this kind of bike' (your sons bike). When you get phone calls pretend as if you dont know much about bike and do not bring up that your sons bike was stolen. Check out the bike and if the bike ends up being yours tell the person you're interested in the bike and go home and call the police. Also be sure that you ask for a bill of sale...if he doesn't have it then thats another reason to suspect. Even if the guy selling it isn't the person who stole it the cops will track him down and with any luck you'll get the bike back. The only reason my boyfriend didn't get his back was because the guy who stole it was very very slick...like a professional con...and even then, they found him a few months later.
