I have a utility trailer with a flat 4 plug connector. How do I figure out which wire is which?
The original connector is gone and the wires from the old trailer are different colors that the replacement connector I bought at auto parts store. Thanks.

Make sure of your ground.
Then, take a hot wire, maybe just a plain wire attached to the + pole of your battery and touch each of the points of the connector. See which light comes on with each point and what color wire is coming out of that point on the connector.
If that doesn’t work, sometimes it is easier to just run new wires from a new connector to new wires. That way you know exactly what goes where and that you have good wiring.
The connector you bought should have the color code with it, if not phone or call in to an auto elect and ask them what colors go to where..(red-brake, white or green-earth, thats all I can remember)
Find where the wires are connected to the light fixtures. One color will be common to both sides — that’ll be the running lights. The other wire (a different color on each side) will be brake/turn. That’s 3 — the 4th is ground.
On your replacement connector, if you’re In the US, it’s brown = running lights, yellow = left brake/turn, green=right brake/turn, white = ground.
Or the whole trailer harness is only a little bit more money if you wanted to go that route.
