how easy is it to remove the mufflers on a older motorcycle?
i bought a honda gl500 recently, and i was wondering if i could simply install straight pipes,or am i going to have to change the jets too,or any other modifications i dont know about.i know on newer motorcycles you have to change the carb but ive heard older bikes are different.is this true?

I can tell you right now that straight pipes on a gl500 is going to sound like crap and your bike will run worse than it sounds.
Leave the stock mufflers on and enjoy the bike.
It will change the back presure and affect the way it draws in air as well. You will probably need to adjust the fuel/air mix. But, that is not really a concern. Older bikes, the nut on the exhoust that is right on the engine tends to seize to the bolt. A lot of people break off the bolt when they try to remove this. I would say put some pressure on the bolts to see if they will turn. If not, then don’t try to change anything. You can create a big problem just trying to go to straight pipes. If it is seized you could try cuting the pipe just before it starts to flange out and attach the straight pipe there. Then adjust the jets if you need to. I do have a friend that has done this.
if you do plan on installing straight pipes i suggest you see if it is legal in your area and if it will pass inspection and you will have to re-jet your carb when you make and mods on your exausest. and there is nothing different with older bikes and you wont have to change the carb
